Oboe Key Systems
Not all oboes are created equal. "Student" model horns are missing some "key" features that help facilitate the use of the instrument and help to play better in tune.
Intermediate/Professional Model
On intermediate and professional model instruments the Left F key is present so it is unnecessary to play "forked F". This improves tone and facilitates movement.
On both intermediate and professional horns the B-flat bell key is present at the bottom of the instrument. On a professional model (pictured here) an A vent key is also present.

Student Model
Left pinky keys are missing the F key and low B-flat. This requires the student to play "forked F" which is incredibly out of tune and can be muffled.
Because the low B-flat key is missing in the left hand, student model horns do not have a B-flat bell key. For this reason there is also no bridge key between the lower joint and bell of the instrument.

Oboe Selection
If possible, buying an instrument with a left F key is ideal as a beginning oboe student. The instrument will be much easier to play and the student will learn proper fingerings with good intonation from the beginning. Student models are less expensive but will need to be replaced as the student progresses.
